SharePoint Agents Grow Up: What the Spring 2025 Update Means for Your Content

On 7 May 2025, Microsoft shared its Spring 2025 SharePoint update, and it was a big one. There is so much in it that I am splitting my review in two. In this first part I focus on the AI side: agents, metadata and Copilot Studio.

1️⃣ SharePoint agents keep getting better

SharePoint agents were a highlight of the update. They are becoming the easiest way to put a Copilot experience on top of a site or document library, scoped to exactly the content you choose.

For my customers this is the sweet spot: no developers needed, and the agent stays within the boundaries of the content and permissions you already manage.

2️⃣ Lower-cost AI metadata autofill

Autofill uses AI to extract information from documents and fill in library columns automatically: contract dates, customer names, invoice amounts, document types. Microsoft announced a lower cost for this capability.

Why I care: good metadata is the foundation of good search, good governance and good AI answers. Cheaper autofill means more organisations can finally afford to tag their content properly.

3️⃣ Tighter Copilot Studio integration

When a SharePoint agent is not enough, you can now move more easily into Copilot Studio to add actions, connect other systems or publish to more channels. Start simple in SharePoint, grow in Copilot Studio.

What I recommend

  • Identify one library where manual tagging is a pain and test autofill on it.
  • Build a SharePoint agent on a well-organised site as a quick win.
  • Keep a list of agent ideas that need actions or integrations; those are your Copilot Studio candidates.

My take

The message of this update is clear: SharePoint is becoming the content engine behind Copilot. The better your content is organised, the better your AI experience will be.

In part 2 I will cover the collaboration updates: Copilot in OneDrive, the new sharing experience, approvals and eSignature. Stay tuned! 👀
