App Builder and Workflows: Building Apps and Automations Just by Describing Them

On 28 October 2025, Microsoft announced App Builder and Workflows in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both let people build things that used to need a developer or a Power Platform expert, just by describing what they want.

1️⃣ App Builder: an app from a conversation

Describe the app you need, for example a dashboard, a tracker or a calculator, and App Builder creates it. It can use your Microsoft 365 content as a starting point and store new data in Microsoft Lists. You can preview it, refine it with more prompts and share it with a link, like a document.

Example I tried: “Build a simple app to track our customer workshops, with date, customer, topic and follow-up actions.” A few minutes later I had a working app.

2️⃣ Workflows: automation in plain language

Workflows automates everyday tasks across Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Planner and approvals, such as reminders, status updates and approval requests. You watch the steps being built as you describe them. It uses the same technology as agent flows in Copilot Studio.

3️⃣ Who is it for?

  • Business users with a small problem to solve and no time to wait for IT.
  • Team leads who want simple trackers and automations for their team.
  • IT, who can now point people to a governed tool instead of shadow IT.

What IT should prepare

  • Both started in the Frontier program, so decide who gets early access.
  • Review the agent inventory and controls in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Agree on simple rules: where apps are stored, who can share them and when something should move to a proper Power Platform solution.

My take

Low-code made app building easier. App Builder and Workflows make it conversational. The challenge is no longer “can people build it?” but “how do we keep what they build governed and useful?”
